The Conquerors Series: Understanding Our Battle with Sin

In this installment of “The Conquerors,” we delve into the complex relationship between sin, the law, and our journey towards sanctification through Christ. The primary passage for this discussion is Romans 7:14-25, where the Apostle Paul articulates the struggle between wanting to do good and the reality of sin’s presence.

The Struggle Within

Paul’s words in Romans 7:14-25 highlight a profound internal conflict. He speaks candidly about his inability to do the good he desires and his tendency to do what he hates. This passage has often been interpreted as a reflection of the Christian’s ongoing struggle with sin, even after coming to faith.

  • Romans 7:15: “For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”
  • Romans 7:24: “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?”

Are We Conquerors or Captives?

One of the central questions posed is whether we are truly conquerors in Christ or still captives to sin. The speaker challenges the traditional interpretation that suggests believers are perpetually bound by sin, arguing instead that sin’s power is broken in Christ.

  • Romans 5:8: The journey through chapters 5 to 8 of Romans is crucial as it outlines the path to victory through sanctification.
  • Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”

The Role of the Law

The law, while good, is portrayed as insufficient to overcome sin due to our sinful nature. Instead, it often highlights our failures, making us aware of our need for a savior.

  • Romans 7:5: “For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us…”

Transformation Through Christ

The sermon emphasizes that transformation and victory over sin come through Christ alone. Paul’s testimony in Romans 7 is seen as a depiction of life before knowing Christ, marked by a struggle with sin that seems insurmountable.

  • Romans 7:25: “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

The speaker underscores the importance of aligning our desires with God’s will, which leads to true fulfillment and victory over sin. This alignment is part of the sanctification process, where our desires and what fulfills us become one in Christ.

Moving Forward in Faith

The message concludes with a call to action for believers to pursue sanctification actively. This involves a commitment to aligning our lives with Christ’s teachings and allowing Him to transform our hearts and minds.

  • Romans 8:1: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

In summary, the sermon invites believers to embrace their identity as conquerors in Christ, not captives to sin. It challenges us to live out this victory through faith and the ongoing process of sanctification, drawing strength from the assurance that Christ has already won the battle for us.
